In Spring ’26, Shopify opened agentic commerce infrastructure to the wider developer ecosystem. Capabilities that previously required additional approval can now be used through UCP, Catalog API, and public tooling to build end-to-end AI shopping experiences.

What do UCP and Catalog API each do?

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) defines how AI assistants interact with merchants across discovery, cart, and checkout. Catalog API turns Shopify products into structured, queryable, real-time data. Developers can build discovery experiences with image search, multimodal search, product URL lookup, and richer attributes.

Why does this matter to Shopify merchants?

AI recommendations depend on data quality. Products with unclear categories, variant names, materials, sizes, alt text, or inventory information lose context more easily. The familiar SEO checklist is expanding:

  • Write product titles for search intent and readability instead of keyword stuffing.
  • Make descriptions clear about use cases, specifications, differentiation, and common questions.
  • Add accurate image alt text and avoid placing critical specifications only inside images.
  • Connect collections, services, and editorial content with relevant internal links.
  • Keep checkout, shipping, and returns information consistent across the store.

Development and operations are converging

Shopify also introduced broader AI Toolkit access, Sidekick App Extensions, Static Apps, and new event and billing infrastructure. The opportunity is larger than using AI to write code: diagnosis, development, store data, and operational actions are moving into a more connected workflow.

This is a good time to revisit product data and theme architecture. A clear, maintainable, machine-readable content system reduces future rework as new commerce channels emerge.
